Crucial Role of AI in Enhancing Inclusion

Watch video below

  • AI is, undoubtedly, an exciting & dynamic technology. Whether it's the fusion of science & engineering, combining & connecting modalities such as translating text into videos or images, or the impressive progress in training neural networks to mirror biological neurons, the potential is extraordinary. Built well, and with inclusion at its core, AI can be a genuine force for good.

  • However, in its current form, AI is far from the “holy grail” it's often marketed as. Like humans, AI has blind spots and this means it often fails to recognise many of the people it is meant to serve.

  • AI’s reliance on small, general datasets can limit its capabilities, particularly when developing products & services intended for diverse local and global users and consumers.

The Bias Problem

Bias in AI is not just a tech problem;

it is OUR problem

How Could This Have Happened?

Questions remain.

  • How DID the soap dispenser in this video pass QA, let alone user testing?

  • Who was included (or indeed excluded), in the testing data?

  • Technically, this likely occurred because the infrared sensor was not designed to detect darker skin tones effectively. However, this isn’t limited to AI. We’ve seen similar issues in medical devices including pulse oximeters (which use light to measure how much oxygen is in the blood), critical during the pandemic)), where non‑inclusive datasets and design decisions led to poorer outcomes for people with darker skin.

  • While some of these issues are now being addressed and, to be fair, may be more a design and testing failure, rather than outright AI failure, the root cause is the same i.e non-inclusive teams, lead to non-inclusive data, resulting in non-inclusive outcomes.

  • Critics argue that such incidents highlight the pervasive diversity challenges within the tech industry, especially when systems are built by third parties and then integrated into clients' supply chains.

This is why AI isn't solely a tech problem; it is a societal one and should concern all of us; morally, and because many of us serve and work with global, diverse customers and colleagues.

  • Organisations therefore need to embed Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) across both their supply chains and their value chains. Unlike SaaS, AI permeates all aspects of an organisation. So even when people may not be aware they’re using AI, their tech vendors almost certainly are.

  • This is one of the reasons why, by not having diversity across most departments, organisations could open themselves up to greater risk.

Stages towards Inclusive Leadership using AI

  • Coming up with solutions for mitigating AI biases and other problematic issues remain ongoing challenges however, we believe a good place to start would be scaling up 'Inclusive Leadership' training simply because:

    • Leadership behaviour, actions, and in-actions significantly shape office culture with employees drawing cues from above

    • In addition, with fast changing demographics and changes in societal attitudes in many countries, customers and employees are demanding that these changes also be reflected in workplaces

    • Organisations and brands that fail to prioritise diversity are missing out on  opportunities in new markets and access to global talent

STAGE 1
EQ+CQ=DQ

Fostering diverse perspectives and expertise in the development, training, and application of LLMs and other AI models ensures AI tools used are ethical, fair, inclusive and aligned with the values and needs of different stakeholders, cultural contexts, and the environment.

We recommend the following three stages to develop leadership skills for

Designing, Building or Purchasing Inclusive AI:

EQ+CQ=DQ framework

THE EQ + CQ = DQ

  • Using the EQ+CQ=DQ framework, our goal is to assist leaders and organisations in fostering more inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplaces by enhancing Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

  • We guide leaders in managing diverse teams, fostering strong cross-cultural relationships, and improving organisational culture through empathy, respect, and collaboration.

  • This is the vital foundation to not just building 'Inclusive Leadership' but Inclusive AI too, by ensuring leaders are able to recognise those not represented in the room or in the datasets they use to train their AI systems.

Why we start with the EQ+CQ=DQ framework

  • While for some, AI emerges as a transformative force across many industries, functions & departments, to others, AI is perceived as a threat.

  • As such, it's important that leaders lead the way both in terms of innovation as well as, in educating and re-assuring team members who may be concerned about their future roles and doing so, using inclusive language, tone and action(s).

STAGE 2
Data Development and Machine Learning Framework

Diverse domain experts working closely with your AI  developers/procurement departments to build/purchase AI systems, which subject to some baseline constraints, align to your organisational values.

STAGE 3
Inclusive AI Agents

Digital companions to complement your Leadership Development and Inclusion training programmes.

  • The AI Agents enable global companies to provide round the clock Inclusive Leadership support and guidelines to recruiting managers, leaders, and value chains with the aim of reducing bias, promoting diversity, and enabling EQ & CQ led inclusive decision-making throughout their organisation (both local & global).
